Malham Chapel Dig 2017
3 - 15 July 2017
Would you like to have the opportunity to dig on the site of an early-medieval chapel in the beautiful surroundings of the Yorkshire Dales? In 2015 and 2016 the ancient chapel of St Helen in Malham, near Skipton, was excavated by Mark Roberts and his students at UCL. To date excavations have confirmed the location of the chapel and corroborated the documentary evidence as to how the chapel was destroyed by the Edwardian chantry commissioners in 1549 and its lead roof removed and melted down for export. Finds have included medieval pottery sherds, lead window cames, medieval glass, painted plaster, and both human and animal bones.
